Finally receiving a much-needed update for the MT-15, but are they sufficient? The Yamaha MT-15 has had some success and some failure. Yamaha’s streetfighter model received some important modifications, but it also lacked some essential ones. Let’s look at some of this article’s main highlights.
Thanks to the new USD fork, the Yamaha MT-15 has finally acquired some bling. While a telescopic fork was optional on the international-spec bike, Yamaha India chose to forego it to reduce expenses. The new Yamaha MT-15’s handling dynamics are also improved with the installation of the USD fork, which raises its visual appeal. The replacement of the outdated box-section swingarm from its predecessor with a superior cast aluminium swingarm further enhances its handling. It also features an updated instrument panel with Bluetooth connectivity for call and message notifications, however, navigation is not included.

What does it overlook?
The Yamaha MT-15 still uses a single-channel ABS in 2022. This, in our opinion, is inappropriate given its performance, sporting nature, and price. Yamaha at least ought to have provided a dual-channel ABS option. The Yamaha R15M model includes both traction control and a quickshifter as standard equipment.
Engine
The 155cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, VVA engine that powers the previous bike also powers the new MT-15. At 10,000 rpm, it generates 18.4 PS, and at 7,500 rpm, 14.1 Nm. The new bike produces 0.2Nm greater torque but 0.1PS less power than the MT-15 BS6 variant. We believe that this is a better trade-off because the power loss is minimal and the torque increase should boost low-end performance. We will hold judgement until we have a chance to test-ride the bike, though.
Styling
While Yamaha has added two new colour options (Racing Blue and Cyan Storm) that set it apart from the previous model, we were hoping for more. The Yamaha MT-15 Version 2.0 should have been upgraded to resemble the current R15 V4 in terms of aesthetics. Imagine how attractive the new MT-15 would have appeared if the Yamaha MT-03 had served as the design inspiration.
Cost and competitors
The 2022 Yamaha MT-15’s starting price of Rs 1.6 lakh (ex-showroom) is a significant increase of almost Rs 12,000 over the outgoing model. Since the new MT-15 lacks several essential features, we would have preferred Yamaha to release it for at least an initial price of Rs. 1.55 lakh. The Suzuki Gixxer 250, TVS Apache RTR 200 4V, Bajaj Pulsar N250, and KTM 125 Duke are some other bikes with comparable performance to this one. Its direct rival is the KTM 125 Duke.
